Sign this petition to protect Brampton’s Active Transportation infrastructure
Brampton Council will likely be voting on a budget motion Tuesday January 27 which will decide the fate of the protected Howden Blvd bike lanes, a key part of the east-west cycling corridor. These bike lane were originally designed to calm traffic and provide a safe convenient connection between north-south pathways, roads and destinations.
In a poll conducted February 20th, during the Mayor’s budget telephone Town Hall, 65% of the 5,000 callers supported investment in active transportation. 17% were unsure. Only 18% were opposed. Yet some Councilors are signalling their support of a motion to remove Howden bike lanes based on a Brampton resident petition of 240 signatures.
Building bike lanes is an essential part of Brampton’s long-range transportation plan. Experts indicate that congestion can only be relieved by encouraging more people to walk, cycle and/or take transit. People will only choose these alternative forms of transportation when they have infrastructure that is safe, convenient, comfortable and connected!
